MEETING MINUTES OLD ORCHARD JUNIOR HIGH PTA THURSDAY JANUARY 17, 2013
Attendees: Marilyn Soglin, Kathleen Brander, Allison Zidek, Lisa Omori, Karen Lavengood, Audrey Guidarelli, Andy Carpenter, Officer Sergio Marino, Ryan Levin, Nancy Kaufman, Thomas George, Paul Kartcheske, Leslie Smith
1. Welcome from PTA President-Marilyn Soglin. In honor or Officer Marino-everyone asked to share their favorite Police Show.
2. Approval of December Minutes: Motion: Lisa Omori Second: Karen Lavengood
3. President Report-Marilyn Soglin: Skipped to save time for Officer Marino’s presentation
4. Principal Report-Andy Carpenter (in Robyn Hawley’s absence)
*MAPS and AIMs Testing wraps up on 1/18. Students are tested 3x a year on Math and Reading. Next testing in Spring
Parent Teacher conferences January 24th and 31st sign up now open and available
8th Graders-Graduation Picture Day January 18, 2013
8th Graders-High School Activity Night February 5, 2013
8th Graders-High School Appointments (re: schedule, etc…) Feb 22 and 25, 2013
All School Play February 7th and 8th
Band Concert for 7th and 8th Graders February 14, 2013
End of Second Trimester February 22, 2013
Recent School Board Meeting Changes to NNHS calendar starting 2014-2015 school year. (start date moves up and exams to be taken prior to winter break) Township Schools will not change their schedule.
5. Committee Reports:
Market Days-Doing Well
Printer Cartridges-Please continue to drop off cartridges in main office and encourage used cartridge donations from parental workplace.
Restaurant Nights-working to set up future dates (tba)
Box Tops-So far $305.00 raised this school year. Next big push set for the end of February. Considering possible incentives for the individual classroom to heighten participation.
Winterfest-Leslie Smith is in the driver’s seat and 15-20 volunteers are needed (to arrive at 530pm) If you haven’t already volunteered and are available, please contact Leslie. Various possibilities to keep the students busy including possible Madden Tournament, b-ball game and Minute to Win It were discussed. NNHS coach to supply various gear as prizes. Need gift cards for student prizes (the more the better). Plan to serve water, cookies and Little Caesars Pizza.
6. Treasurers Report:
Box Tops Brought in $305.00
PTA Membership is down. Target was 270 members. So far we’re at 242 members. (Please note $4.25 of PTA dues goes directly to State).
Market Day has raised about $200.00 so far which is right on schedule w/ last year. A need for additional funds was raised. Sources of revenue include pre-pack sales and Winterfest admission fees. Other expenses to come include pre-pack purchases, 8th grade bash/reception, ISAT snacks and Winterfest expenses.
Balance as of January 17, 2013 $14,067.68

8. Officer Sergio Marino Presentation:
SRO at school ½ day 5 days a week. Main goal SAFETY
Two different options discussed for youth offenders (both intervention and prevention programs):
a. Youth Offender Court Call-youth outreach program for youth and family
b. Youth Offender Pier Jury Program-program set up to divert sending kids to formal court and to make juveniles accountable for their actions.
Warning sign for drug use-EYES TELL THE STORY!!!!
Safety Measures Taken:
Annual security check of the building and emergency procedures is done annually just before the upcoming school year
Lock Down Drills-announced and unannounced
Re-evaluation of entry to building procedures-possible minor changes after Sandy Hill shootings.
Neighborhood Watch Group-GET INVOLVED
